Resource or link; description and relevanceIn the spirit of free and open source software (F/OSS), MIT are attempting to establish a community in which information will be freely exchanged, to further the understanding of open source and its implications outside the realm of software development. They invite researchers to post their papers on open source and free software here, and to add themselves to the research directory, so that our community can become steadily larger and more comprehensive. The Open Source Education Foundation's (a not-for-profit company) purpose is to enhance k-12 education through the use of technologies and concepts derived from The Open Source and Free Software movement. bodington.org is the home of the Bodington Open Source Project. The Bodington software system is used by The University of Leeds (UK) to implement its virtual learning environment Bodington Common. They are now making this an open source project so that the worldwide academic community can use the software for free and can contribute to its development. MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) is a free and open resource designed primarily for faculty and students of higher education. Links to online learning materials are collected along with annotations such as peer reviews and assignments. MERLOT is also a community of people who are involved in education. Community members help MERLOT grow by contributing materials and adding assignments and comments. Many community members make their professional information available in MERLOT's member directory. Perhaps not strictly Open Source, but a useful resource and approach. MimerDesk is a web-based groupware environment designed for a wide variety of uses such as personal management, computer-supported collaborative learning, carrying out projects, and setting up communities. Its main strengths include a very customizable group system which allows many groups to work simultaneously on a shared database with tools like Calendar, Tasks, Forums, Links, Chat, Reviews, Voting, Files, Instant Messages, Profiles, and many more. Fle3 is a web-based learning environment. Fle3 is server software for computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL). Fle3 is Open Source and Free Software released under the GNU General Public Licence (GPL). Fle3 is easy to localize to different languages (all you need to do is to translate one file). Currently users may choose their user interfaces language to be Finnish, English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Italian, Lithuanian or German. klaatu.pc.athabascau.ca/cgi-bin/b7/main.pl?rid=1 Bazaar is a web content hosting platform, developed and used at Athabasca University (Canada) and designed with users (and administration) in mind. Its content-management system, coupled with a flexible permission system –not to mention a modular design and mature API– allows for easy extension and integration into existing administrative systems. With the flexibility and customizability inherent in Bazaar, inspired, in part, by the Open Source movement, it can be used to deliver courseware, portals or any of the other myriad types of web based projects. Bazaar is available to the education community (K-12 and post-secondary) as an Open Source alternative to such proprietary and expensive commercial systems as WebCT and Blackboard. (see also Bazaar in software section) sourceforge.net/projects/kewl/ The Knowledge Environment for Web-based Learning (KEWL) is a full online courseware system with all the tools needed to follow a constructivist approach to online learning. |
