Debian-Med is an internal project to develop Debian into an operating system that is particularly well fit for the requirements for medical practice and research. The goal of Debian-Med is a complete system for all tasks in medical care which is build completely on free software.

The SMARTIE Web site provides a collection of multi-platform Medical Decision Support software or MedNotesTM, from the simplest score (i.e. Glasgow Coma Scale) to the the most elaborate decision support tool for the management of more complex clinical situations (i.e. Acute Abdominal Pain). The MedNotes TM software is free and available on different platforms.

The goal of SMARTIE is to offer a carefully selected comprehensive collection or "suite" of medical software decision tools or MedNotesTM ranging from clinical calculators (i.e. risk factor scoring) up to the most advanced medical decision support tools (i.e. acute abdominal pain diagnosis). OpenGALEN is a not-for-profit organisation to license the key technology components of GALEN to third parties, under open source.

The motivation behind GALEN (which results a decade of research and development funded by the European Commission) is to find ways of storing detailed clinical information, about patients, in a computer system so that clinicians are able to store and review clinically relevant information (at a level of detail relevant to them) and computers can manipulate what is stored, for retrieval, abstraction, display, comparison, etc.
